Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.

Cross-Border Effects

Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.

Smuggling Techniques

When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."

Security Service Goals

Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
