Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in several interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, after Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "weak men" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of play – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate future in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, extending his poor record against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There is no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
